Crystal ball gazing: What to expect in data in 2022

In the run up to the holidays, my colleagues pulled together highlights of some of the issues that we may see in the data protection and cybersecurity landscape in 2022. These can all be found on our RopesDataPhiles blog

Strangely, for an area of law that is dynamic and rapidly evolving, a number of issues that will be in focus in 2022 are the same as they were when we crossed into 2021:

  • International dataflows from the EU to US remain a tricky challenge for business;
  • Increasing numbers of sophisticated cyber-attacks bring security and user authentication into the spotlight;
  • The regulation of AI and AR continues to loom;
  • And, as ever, there is increasing regulation of personal data in a number of countries and US States, where laws are being introduced which broadly follow the structure of GDPR with regard to individual's rights and extra-territorial application of the law.

So what will 2022 bring? Well have a read and see what we think. Let us know if you agree or if you have other ideas...

If I have one hope, it is that if the password is to be consigned to the digital museum then what replaces it needs to be just as simple to use. But, unless it is biometric, I have a feeling it may not be, so I had better find my phone in order to find the code just sent to allow me to access my favorite food delivery service... Happy 2022!

2021 was an interesting year. While vaccinations spread and some sense of normalcy started to return, new strains of COVID-19 led to additional waves of shutdowns that stalled many of the debates. In 2022, we anticipate that the move toward a "new normal" will continue, and we will once again start to see traction on some of these data, privacy, and cybersecurity issues. As a preview, here are some of the key areas where we expect to see potential developments in 2022.
